Impressionism (1860-1880s)
Key Artists: Vincent Van Gogh, Edouard Manet, Mary Cassatt
Summary: Impressionism came about as many painters, originally in Paris, strived to break away from traditional art. Impressionist painters were often done spontaneously and quickly only to capture movement. Nature was often emphasized as colors was used to capture it. Color and line was the focus of impressionists as they often experimented to deliberately be different from their predecessors.
My Opinion: I don’t like impressionism too much because it seems messy to me and confusing. I like art that is concise. I do like the fact that it captures movement and is spontaneous. Impressionism gives me a light feeling where I feel that life is one blended motion.

Takashi Murakami Fact: In 1998 an anime-inspired sculpture of a masturbating boy sold for $15.2 million at Sotheby’s made by Murakami.
I question Murakami’s work becuase it has so many contradicting elements in it such as cute and lving flowings to sexual sculptures that are very porn-like. His work makes me want to know who he is as a person because he puts so many different elements into his work.
